WASHINGTON, D.C. – CNN should focus on concerns that Americans have over the state of U.S. democracy in the presidential debate tonight, says a new letter sent to the network by a coalition representing tens of millions of Americans.
The Declaration for American Democracy specifically urged debate moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash to ask President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump how they would support rule of law and a peaceful transfer of power post-election, underscoring the importance of challenging falsehoods relating to U.S. elections.
The letter also asked CNN to fact check any misstatements on the functioning of our democracy. “It is CNN’s responsibility to the electorate to correct any false claims related to our election that may be introduced throughout the debate,” notes the letter, citing that November will be the first presidential election since the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Democracy was a defining issue in the 2022 midterm elections and all indicators show it will once again be a defining issue in the 2024 presidential contest. A CBS/YouGov poll earlier this year found that half of likely voters were more concerned about the U.S. having a functioning democracy than they were about the U.S. having a strong economy.
This year, voters in 21 states will face new voting restrictions in the upcoming general election that didn’t exist in previous mid-term or presidential elections, due to restrictive anti-votre laws passed through state legislatures in recent years.
“We urge you to ask serious questions about where the candidates stand on the threats facing U.S. democracy, and to encourage them to share their positions clearly on issues regarding the integrity of U.S. elections,” concludes the letter.

Unfortunately, we are NOT a well-informed citizenry! We have committed heinous acts galore, mostly dependent on the less-educated and racist that equates white skin with supremacy. Our skin color is a "shell", and deserves NO special treatment. Most serial-killers are white! In itself, it's nothing to be "proud" of, just an accident of birth!
